Wood Slices and Stumps

Welcome to the world of DIY craft projects, where small, medium and larger wood slices and stumps take centre stage. In this blog post, we explore the possibilities offered by wood slices and stumps. These charming wooden pieces are not just raw materials; they are ready and waiting for your creative decoration. Let’s explore how you can personalize and transform these wood slices and stumps into unique works of art. Adults and kids will enjoy this project.

DIY Ideas:

  • Before painting and decorating wood stumps and slices, we suggest you use a sandpaper block or a piece of sandpaper to ensure a smooth surface.
  • You can apply a coat of Mod Podge after painting the wood with Acrylic or Chalk Paint and letting it dry altogether; wait until the paint is absolutely dry before decorating.
  • After decorating the slice or stump, apply a coat of Mod Podge sealant or another suitable sealant to your artwork to protect it. The small bottles of Mod Podge go a long way.

Wood Slices

  • Coasters: Wood slices are perfect for creating stylish coasters. Simply paint or stain them to match your décor, add a layer of sealant for durability, and voila! You have functional and decorative coasters to protect your surfaces.
    • Rustic Coasters: Sand the wood stumps, apply a matt protective finish, and use them as natural and unique coasters for your drinks.
  • Painting Coasters: See the video below for some easy ideas for adults and kids alike.

  • Decoupage and Collage: Try out your artistic talents by incorporating decoupage or collage techniques onto the wood slices. Use decorative paper, fabric, or even photos to create one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story. You can also make a Holiday Ornament.
  • Wall Art: Transform the wood slices into mini masterpieces for your walls. Paint intricate designs, stencil inspirational quotes, or abstract patterns. Attach a small hook to the back of the slice, and hang up your decor.
  • Signs and Plaques: Create charming signs or plaques by painting messages, names, or quotes onto the wood slices. These make for different and delightful home decorations or personalized gifts. Use stencils (sentiments and/or designs); otherwise, transfer paper (to outline a design from a book or magazine or free colouring designs for kids on Google, etc.) so that you can transfer the design onto the wood slice with Mod Podge. Otherwise, print a picture (size it for the wood slice) of your favourite pet or any other picture that is special to you) and use Mod Podge to transfer it to the Wood Slice. Make sure to use a copy and not the original picture.

  • Stamping: Paint the wood slice with white or light-coloured chalk paint or acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely. Use acrylic stamps or rubber stamps to imprint a design or designs on the slice and then paint and decorate the design or inspirational words. Kids and adults will have a lot of fun and the result will be special. Hang your artwork on the wall or give it to a loved one or friend as a gift.
  • Make a Wood Slice Teddy Bear: Kids will have fun with this easy technique. See the YouTube Video below:

  • Jute Hanger Creations: Take advantage of the built-in jute hanger or drill a hole in your slice and thread some Jute rope through it and incorporate it into your project. Hang the decorated wood slices on doorknobs, hooks, or as part of a mobile for a bohemian touch.

Wood Stumps

  • Table Decor: Paint and decorate the wood stumps, seal the paint with Mod Podge. Then once dry, arrange the small wood stumps as a centrepiece on your dining table. You can place them on a glass dish in the centre of the table. They add a touch of nature and rustic charm to your home. You can also use a glass dish with a pretty LED CANDLE (flameless candle) surrounded with the decorated wood stumps. Remember the stumps are wood so for safety only use an LED Candle not a Candle with a real flame.
  • Garden Markers: Label your plants and herbs in the garden by placing small wood stumps with painted names. It’s a functional and aesthetic addition to your outdoor space.
  • Candle Holders: Hollow out the top of the stumps slightly to create rustic candle holders. Add different heights for a visually appealing display. This creates a cosy and nature-inspired candle holder. It is preferable to use LED candles as mentioned above.
  • Drawer Pulls: Cut small sections of the stumps and shape them into drawer pulls or cabinet handles for a nature-inspired touch in your home.
  • Paperweights: Keep your papers organized with small wood stumps used as decorative paperweights on your desk or shelves. Paint the stumps with Chalk paint or Acrylic paint. Don’t forget to use Mod Podge glossy or matt sealer or another suitable sealer to finish off your project and keep your artwork perfect for a very long time. You could glue on some gems or rhinestones to make the paperweight more decorative.
  • Keyrings: Paint and decorate the wood stump (let it dry before painting on the sealer) and and then seal it with Mod Podge sealer. Let the Sealer dry. Drill a hole on one side of the stump (adult’s only), place the keyring through the hole and add your keys to the ring. This makes a different gift for loved ones or friends. Add colourful glued-on rhinestones if you choose.
  • Photo Holders: Slice the stumps into thin disks and create slits to hold photos, creating a charming photo display.
  • Name Card Holders: For special occasions, smooth the stump with a sandpaper block or a piece of sandpaper; then slice a small groove into the stump to hold name cards for seating arrangements.
  • Bird Feeder: Create a simple bird feeder by attaching a small platform to the top of the stump for the bird seeds.
  • Pet Stands: Create elevated food and water stands for your pets by attaching bowls to the flattened surface of the stumps.
