We’ve all heard that it’s better to give than receive and while everyone understands that is true, we’ll bet you might not know there’s gift giving etiquette involved. That said, here are a few things you need to consider so you’re giving gifts in good taste.
Dollar Values Don’t Count
When someone gives you a gift, it’s a good custom to give one back. Problem is, often people spend too much time trying to decide if the return gift is of equal value. Some even go so far as to add receipts to the gifts so the people can return something they don’t like. Try to keep in mind that gifts are personal and attaching a dollar value to them only cheapens the entire experience.
You should also keep in mind that not all cultures celebrate the holidays identically and try not to offend anyone with what would otherwise be a well-intentioned gift. Here’s a good example. In North America, unwrapping a gift in front of friends and relatives is considered proper, but that’s not the case in every culture. In fact, some people actually consider that in poor taste because gifts should be opened in private according to their customs.
