At The Craft Corner, creativity is at the heart of what we do. Yes, we are a business, and we love helping people find the crafts, supplies and gifts they’re looking for. But there’s another side to what we do that matters just as much: we genuinely love the creative community that surrounds us.

Canada has a remarkable art and craft scene, and we think it deserves to be celebrated.

Canadian Arts & Crafts – Our artists and makers work in an amazing variety of styles and mediums. You’ll find painters, photographers, sculptors, illustrators, textile artists, jewellers, potters, woodworkers, fibre artists and crafters of every description.

And Canadian creativity isn’t confined to the major cities. Some of the most interesting work can be found at local craft shows, farmers’ markets, community art events, small galleries and independent studios.

That is part of what makes the Canadian art scene so enjoyable to explore. You never quite know what you’ll discover.

Art Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

We sometimes think of “art” as something that belongs in a gallery, but creativity is much bigger than that.

A handmade Christmas ornament, a painted flowerpot, a scrapbook page, a knitted scarf or a child’s carefully decorated picture can all be creative expressions. They don’t have to be displayed in a museum to be meaningful.

In fact, some of our favourite creative projects are the ones made simply because someone wanted to make something.

There doesn’t have to be a grand reason.

Sometimes it’s enough to sit down, get out the craft supplies and see what happens.

The Joy of Making Something Yourself

There is a particular satisfaction that comes from making something with your own hands.

Maybe it’s a gift for someone special. Maybe it’s a decoration for your home. Perhaps you’re trying a new craft you’ve always wanted to learn, or returning to one you enjoyed years ago.

And don’t worry if the finished project doesn’t look exactly like the picture on the instructions!

Creativity isn’t about perfection. It’s about experimenting, learning and enjoying the process. Some of the best ideas happen when things don’t go quite according to plan.

Supporting Canada’s Artists and Makers

One of the nicest ways to become part of Canada’s creative community is to support the people who are creating within it.

Visit a local gallery or artisan market. Take a look at a community art show. Buy something from an independent Canadian maker when you can. Share an artist’s work with a friend. Or simply take the time to discover what creative people in your own community are doing.

Every artist and maker has a story behind what they create, and discovering those stories can be every bit as interesting as discovering the finished work.

Inspiration Is Everywhere

You don’t have to wait for a big art festival or a special event to find inspiration.

Look around your own community. Visit a local craft show. Explore a gallery. Take a walk and pay attention to the colours and textures around you. Browse through some Canadian artwork online. Pick up a new craft project and give it a try.

And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s perfectly fine too.

A blank piece of paper and a handful of craft supplies can be the beginning of something surprisingly fun.
