Everyone has a mother. That’s why it’s no surprise that the celebration of Mother’s Day goes all the way back to ancient times and the Greeks and Romans. However, mothers were elevated to a completely different level back then (and one that many modern women feel we deserve today!) because in those ancient times festivals were held in honour of the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele.
Fast forward to more modern times and a celebration of those special women in our lives that’s a little more up to date. The predecessor of today’s version took hold in the UK and was generally celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It gave faithful women a chance to return to their mother church for a special service.
Mother’s Day on this continent goes back to the 1900s. Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia started what were called Mother’s Day Work Clubs which were essentially schools that taught new mothers how to look after their children.

Continuing from there, Jarvis put together another concept called Mothers’ Friendship Day. This was an informal group put together to promote reconciliation between the two sides in the Civil War. The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908 with financial backing from a Philadelphia department store.
While many people think Mother’s Day has become a commercial venture, carefully selecting a gift for your mom on this special day shows how much you really care.
