Painting Flowers on Different Surfaces
- Canvas: Try loose watercolour blooms for a soft, dreamy look or bold acrylic flowers for statement art.
- Wood: Use acrylics or paint pens to stencil or freehand florals on trays, signs, or wood slices. Visit our blog for more ideas and instructions for painting and decorating wood projects.
- Paper: Great for cards or journals. Try blending markers or watercolour pencils; kids can use crayons, coloured pencils or paint pens.
- Book Cover Floral Painting. Make a plain book cover look colourful and bright.
- Idea: You can also use floral or other patterned self-adhesive wallpaper stickers or even self-adhesive shelf paper. You may want to add some Mod Podge or other glue under the sticker/s or paper to ensure that they adhere properly.
- T-shirts & Fabric: Use fabric paint and a stencil for floral designs on t-shirts, tablecloths, and runners.
- Choose fabric (wrinkle-free, washable) and cut out flower shapes large and small to glue to a T-Shirt. Let the glue dry. Outline the flower with fabric glitter paint and embellish with rhinestones if you like.
- Use fabric glue to glue the flower shapes to the T-Shirt. Let the glue dry completely before washing the t-shirt.
- Stencil a floral design on a t-shirt, sweater or any other suitable fabric. Paint a table runner or even a blank tablecloth
- Seed Bead Flowers
- Painting flowers on Terracotta Plant Pots
TIP: Seal your artwork properly depending on the surface – use Mod Podge for wood, or a fixative spray (outdoors) for paper.
DIY Paper and Foam Flower Projects
Use ready-made or make your own paper roses or foam roses to embellish:
- Gift boxes – paint the outside of the box with Chalk or Acrylic Paint. Let it dry and then arrange the pretty flowers (and lace if you like) on the box. When you are happy with the placement, use Mod Podge or another suitable glue to glue the flowers to the top of the box.
- If you are gifting cookies or any other edibles, it is preferable not to paint the inside of the box.
- See our blog on decorating Gift Boxes.
- Greeting cards and envelopes – cut out colourful paper, fabric, foam or napkin flowers to glue onto a special card. Ensure that the card fits into the envelope. Use Mod Podge or another suitable glue.
- If you have a Cricut, Silhouette or other digital electronic cutting machine, cut out some pretty flowers to paste onto the card and envelope.

- Kids will enjoy this project but may require adult supervision and assistance.
- Paint or stencil flowers onto the shapes.
