🎨 DIY ideas
- Acrylic Painting
Use acrylic craft paint or, even better, a multi-surface acrylic designed for ceramics. FolkArt Multi-Surface, for example, is specifically made for surfaces including ceramics and can also be used for stencilling.
- Ideas:
- Florals; Botanical leaves; Abstract designs; Mandala-style patterns; Cottagecore designs; Seasonal decorations; Names, initials or inspirational words.
- Stencilling:

- Decoupage
- Napkins, decorative paper, tissue paper and printed designs can be used to create beautiful plates. Mod Podge specifically supports decoupage on ceramic surfaces.
- More ideas: Floral napkins; Vintage botanical prints; Birds and butterflies; Vintage postage/stamps; Maps; Music-sheet style paper; Christmas napkins
- Dot painting
- Use the end of a paintbrush, dotting tools or cotton swabs to make colourful dot patterns and mandalas.
- Paint pouring / fluid-style designs
- Acrylic pouring can create interesting abstract patterns, although we’d recommend keeping the amount of liquid controlled so it doesn’t collect excessively around the edges.
- Stamped or transferred designs
- Decorative transfers, rub-on images and suitable ceramic decals can produce a more finished-looking result without requiring advanced painting skills.
- Metallic accents
- Gold, silver, copper or bronze acrylic paint can be used around the rim or over portions of a design. A simple white + gold design could look particularly nice.
- Texture
- You could experiment with texture mediums, raised stencil designs, modelling paste or dimensional paint, followed by acrylic colour.
Enjoy painting and decorating these unfinished ceramic plates. It’s easy and fun!
