A Short History of Hanukkah
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago. After defeating the Seleucid forces, the Maccabees found only a small amount of oil – enough for one day – but it miraculously lasted for eight days.
This miracle is remembered by lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, enjoying festive foods, and sharing gifts or gelt (coins).
